The second round of the Cadet Kart Championship saw the paddock make the trip south to Lydd, with a total of 24 drivers making the trek in the Cadet 105 category.

The weekend kicked off with qualifying on Saturday to decide the grid positions for the heats. After the 8 minute session, round 1 winner Riley Wright topped the time sheets by just over a tenth from Leon Barlow who in turn had a tenth in hand over Jared Fox-Whiteley. At the end of the session, the top 12 drivers in 105 were covered by less than a second with a few of the CKC 112 drivers mixed in.

The opening heat saw Barlow drop down to 4th early on thanks to moves from Fox-Whiteley and Tom Holden, with Ben Adrian sticking with the top 4. The quintet of drivers all crossed the line after 12 laps with just 0.613 between each other, with Adrian backing the fastest lap of the race. Wright would take the win ahead of Fox-Whiteley and Holden. Behind, Ellis Snow would storm through the field to 10th, having started in 20th.

Heat 2’s grid would be the result of race 1, with Wright and Fox-Whiteley leading the field away. This time, it would be the top 4 of Wright, Fox-Whiteley, Barlow and Freddie Moore that would pull away from the field, as Holden and Adrian went straight on at the final corner on the opening lap. It wasn’t long before the top 2 managed to pull away, with Fox-Whiteley snatching the lead just after half distance. Barlow and Moore charged them down in the closing laps, but couldn’t catch the leaders before the flag fell. Despite the off, Holden managed to come home 8th with Adrian chasing him home after the had fallen outside the top 20.

The final heat saw Fox-Whiteley, Wright and Barlow get the jump on the rest of the field, while Holden made moves quickly to get into 4th. But by the time he had done so, he had a 1 second gap to make up to the leaders. Holden became locked in a battle with Haris Roberts and Freddie Moore for 4th place, with the trio swapping places lap after lap. With 2 laps to go, the 3 leaders started fighting, each taking a turn at the front of the field, but it was Barlow who took the win over Fox-Whiteley with Wright 3rd. Holden won the battle for 4th over Moore and Ben Adrian.

Those results gave Jared Fox-Whiteley pole for the final, with Wright lining up alongside. Barlow and Holden held row 2, with Holden and Moore on row 3. When the lights went out, the top 4 of Fox-Whiteley, Wright, Holden and Barlow set about pulling away from the rest of the field, lead by Moore.

Wright soon decided he would rather lead from the front, taking the lead at the top end of the circuit, with Fox-Whiteley sticking to his bumper. Fox-Whiteley then went for a brave move into the final chicane to retake the lead as the race cruised past half distance. Then heading into the final corners, Wright sent his black & silver machine down the inside of Fox-Whiteley’s #79 machine to take the lead, but he went so wide that Holden and Barlow were able to squeak through, dropping him to 4th in 1 swift move.

Fox-Whiteley managed to claw his way back to 2nd with just a hand full of laps to go. The attempt came on the final lap, but instead of taking the lead, Fox-Whiteley fell back down to 4th, leaving Wright free to take his second win of the season, being chased home by Tom Holden and Leon Barlow. Ben Adrian won the fight for 5th, after a race long battle with Haris Roberts and Freddie Moore. Strong performances from Melissa Adrian, Isaac Parkinson & Ellis Snow completed the top 10.

After all that action, the paddock gets a few weeks to take a breath before heading to Fulbeck on July 3rd & 4th for the 3rd round of the championship. As ever, all the action will be streamed live on the CKC Facebook page, so make sure to check it out so you don’t miss any of the action.
